Top 5 Literary Quotes by Genre

Ever read a line from your favorite book that filled your heart and mind? Made you pause for moment to ponder the weight of the words? Quotes such as these are indiscriminate to their genres. From children's lit to YA to nonfiction, we can all find an ounce of wisdom between the lines.

1. Children's Literature

"It's been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will."

- L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

As a child, I flew through this witty children`s literature classic on dreamy, summer nights.  Every so often, Anne would send out an ounce of glorious wisdom through her positive mantras. Anne`s story not only inspired me at that young age, but her words carry weight into my adult life. This timeless quote inspires living presently and fully in the moment.

2. Young Adult Fiction

"Heart lesson #3: post-heartbreak survival.

The heart is resilient, I mean literally. When a body is burned, the heart is the last organ to oxidize. While the rest of the body can catch flame like a polyester sheet on campfire, it takes hours to burn the heart to ash. My dear sister, a near-perfect organ! Solid, inflammable."

- Ibi Kasli, Skinny

This is not only my favorite YA quote but also my favorite YA novel! For starters, Ibi Kaslik has a gift for framing common paradigms of the human experience into fresh perspectives. Kaslik`s clever quotes always create a sort of "ah-hah" moment. The quote above reflects Kaslik`s ability to mix dark humor with encouragement. Teenage Sarah is screaming "YES!" for this bitter love novel.

3. Poetry

"i am water

soft enough
to offer life
tough enough
to drown it away"

-Rupi Kaur, Milk and Honey

Shoutout to Rupi Kaur for being a 21st century feminist icon! Like many of her poignant short poems, this one hits deep. Rupi Kaur captures the power of affirmation through poetry time and time again.

4. Classic Fiction

"I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life."

-F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

The insightful Nick Carraway at it again. Fitzgerald gathers the right words in just the right way to make this poignant literary quote. I always find myself empathizing with Nick because of Fitzgerald`s wonderful use of diction. I think this quote is universal and timeless.

5. Science Fiction / Horror

"Beware, for I am fearless and therefore powerful."

-Mary Shelley, Frankenstein

Mary Shelley's classic, powerful quote is one for the ages. Anyone can find their inner warrior in this eight word line.
