Ten Literary Quotes About Winter

We scrambled to get as many orders out today as we possibly could before the snow took over our roadways. Chris loaded the truck and Dave took them to the post office.

Finally, we had time to play. We love a deep, beautiful snow. I started a pot of spicy soup, then Piper and I suited up to take a long, pensive walk to survey our neighborhood, during which I was quietly compiling my favorite literary snow quotes.

I snapped a few pics and returned home excited to post my ideas.

1. “The snow doesn't give a soft white damn Whom it touches.”

e.e. cummings, soft white damn

2. “Well, I know now. I know a little more how much a simple thing like a snowfall can mean to a person.”

Sylvia Plath, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath

3. “I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently?"

Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass

4. “A snowball in the face is surely the perfect beginning to a lasting   friendship."

Markus Zusak, The Book Thief

5. "Winter lies too long in country towns; hangs on until it is stale and shabby, old and sullen."

Willa Cather, My Ántonia

6. "It was cold and barren. It was no longer the view that I remembered. The sunshine of her presence was far from me. The charm of her voice no longer murmured in my ear."

Wilkie Collins, The Woman in White

7. "... This is the Hour of Lead —

Remembered, if outlived,

As Freezing persons, recollect the Snow —

First —Chill —then Stupor —then the letting go —."

—Emily Dickinson, After great pain, a formal feeling comes —

8.  "Sunshine cannot bleach the snow, nor time unmake what poets know."

—Ralph Waldo Emerson

9. "If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?"

—Percy Bysshe Shelley

10. “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.”

― John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley: In Search of America

Now that soup should be just about ready. Stay cozy and stay safe.
